Sharmila was born born and brought up in Hyderabad, however she also spent her childhood in Kolkata. She is great granddaughter of the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. She was offered a film when she was just 13 year old. Before getting married to Mansoor Ali Khan Sharmila Tagore converted her religion to Islamic and also changed her name to Ayesha Sultana however she never used this name.
Her husband Mansoor Ali Khan is the 9th Nawab of Pataudi family and was former captain of Indian cricket team. She has received many awards for her work in Bollywood and was also awarded with Padma Bhushan.
