Viswanathan Anand was born on 11th December 1969 in Tamilnadu, India. His father Krishnamurthy Viswanathan was a retired general manager of South Railway and mother Sushila was a housewife.

He has two siblings one sister Anuradha (professor in the United States) and brother Shiva Kumar (Manager of Crompton Greaves).

In the year 1996, he married Aruna and has one son Akhil. Viswanathan Anand turned his focus towards Chess since he was 6 years old.

Viswanathan Anand was educated at Don Bosco Matriculation High School and completed his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai.

Chess Career

Viswanathan Anand became India’s first GM in the year 1988 when he was just 18 years old and won the first tournament (Reggio Emilia Tournament) in the year 1991.

He also made his 1st attempt to win FIDE’s World Chess championship however he couldn’t win quarterfinals. In the year 1998, he faced Karpov in the world-class championship by clearing the candidates round where he defeated Michael Adams.
