Born on 19 May 1974, he is the eldest among his eight siblings. He belongs to the Zamindari Muslim family of Lambardars. His native place is Budhana, Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh.
He is married to Anjali and lives in Mumbai. They have a daughter and a son.
He has done graduation in chemistry from Gurukul Kangri Vishwidalaya, Haridwar. He, later on, went to National School of Drama after discovering his keen interest in cinema and dramatics.
Nawaz career has been full of ups and downs. Stardom hasn’t come easy to him. He has hustled really hard to be at the place where is right now.
His journey started in Delhi where he went to get a better job after working as a chemist in Vadodara for a year. There, he got introduced to drama and stage. This is when he learned his true calling. He acted in more than ten plays to become eligible for admissions in National School of Drama (NSD). After graduating from NSD in 1996, he shifted to Mumbai in lieu of getting the golden opportunity of working in Bollywood.

He, later on, got some recognition for his role in the movie Black Friday (2007) and Peepli live (2010). After these movies, the next few projects such as Kahaani (2012) and Paan Singh Tomar (2012) helped him to make his stand on the industry. In the same year, his movie Patang: The Kite was premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. He was praised for his performance. His popularity increased many folds with Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur which in true sense was a major breakthrough in his career. He became people’s favorite with this movie.
