Jalota was born on July 23, 1953, in Nainital. Purshottam Das Jalota, his father was also a known devotional (bhajan) Singer. He has four siblings – two brothers and two sisters. Jalota belongs to Sham Chowrasi Gharana of Punjab.
Anup has completed his relevant degree from Bhatkande Music Institute, Lucknow.
Anup Jalota had been married thrice. His first marriage was with Sonali Sheth. She is also a singer. The duo became quite popular in North India while performing together but, later on, they stopped working together after their divorce.
His second marriage was an arranged marriage with Bina Bhatia which too ended in divorce.
His third marriage was with Medha Gujral. Medha died on November 25, 2014, after kidney failure. The couple has a son named Aryaman. He is currently studying at Princeton University.
His career started as a chorus singer. The first job was in All India radio. Later on, he became a lead singer who is backed by a sarangi player, guitarist, sarod player, violinist, etc. He has sung many songs. He was also the presenter of a show. His show, Dharam and Hum, used to get telecast on Star Plus from 2002.
Anup can sing in eight different languages. He has recorded more than 1500 bhajans and ghazals. The songs which got him recognition all over the country and the world are Jag Mein Sundar Hain Do Naam, Rang De Chunariya, Main Nahi Makhan Khayo, Chandariya Jhini Re Jhini, Tere Mann Mein Ram, etc. But the song Aisi Lagi Lagan tops the list.
Anup has also sung various songs written by Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj. He also sang the title song for the album Noorani Chehra which was released to honour the Golden Jubilee of Aga Khan.
He performs in various live concerts, shows, and events organized in the country as well as abroad. Till now, he has performed in more than 5000 live concerts. He was also part of Big Boss show’s 12th season.
He has earned a record number of more than 100 gold platinum and multi-platinum discs till now.
